Applying a Framework for Accessing the Health System Challenges to Scaling up mHealth in South Africa

, , , ,
South Africa

Mobile phone technology has demonstrated the potential to improve health service delivery, but there is little guidance to inform decisions about acquiring and implementing mHealth technology at scale in health systems. Using the case of community-based health services (CBS) in South Africa, we apply a framework to appraise the opportunities and challenges to effective implementation of mHealth at scale in health systems.

ARISE: Drivers of Routine Immunization System Performance at the District Level

, , ,
Global

In 2011, ARISE conducted in-depth case studies in three countries (Cameroon, Ethiopia, and Ghana) to explore and describe the factors underlying performance improvement in routine immunization in Africa.4 The studies aimed to define the pathways through which specific drivers improved RI system performance (as measured by coverage with the third dose of DTP/Pentavalent vaccine)5 by investigating the experience of 12 districts. This ARISE research brief reports the results of these in-depth studies.

Understanding the needs and wants of pregnant women and mothers

, , ,
South Africa

Maternal, perinatal and under-5 mortality in South Africa remain high. It is estimated that 40% of all deaths are avoidable. With the ubiquity of mobile services in developing markets, value-added services such as mobile money and mobile health (mHealth) are increasingly offered as a more convenient and cheaper solution for people to access not only information but also actual financial and healthcare services.

Using a Fingerprint Recognition System in a Vaccine Trial to Avoid Misclassification

, , , , ,
Global

The potential for misidentification of trial participants, leading to misclassification, is a threat to the integrity of randomized controlled trials. The correct identification of study subjects in large trials over prolonged periods is of vital importance to those conducting clinical trials. Currently used means of identifying study participants, such as identity cards and records of name, address, name of household head and demographic characteristics, require large numbers of well-trained personnel, and still leave room for uncertainty.

Africa Routine Immunization System Essentials (ARISE): Health System and Community Partnerships

, ,
Global

Closing the equity gap for routine immunizations requires harnessing community resources, including social, political, and in-kind support, to augment those of the health system. How can those resources be brought together productively, and to accomplish what? The ARISE Project, created by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to assemble the evidence on what drives improvements in RI performance in Africa, conducted in-depth studies in Cameroon, Ethiopia, and Ghana to gain a better understanding of these dynamics. ARISE

Improving Data Use in Decision Making: An Intervention to Strengthen Health Systems

, , , , , , , ,
Global

Health systems strengthening has become a top priority of many global and national health agendas as a way to improve health outcomes. With the global health context becoming increasingly complex, national health systems are beginning to move away from a focus on disease-specific health responses to comprehensive strengthening of health systems. This paper will discuss the unique role of health data in strengthening the other five building blocks of health systems; define specific interventions to strengthen the use of data in decision making; and provide a framework for developing, monitoring, and evaluating interventions to improve the use of and demand for data.

Assessment of the quality of immunization data produced by the national individual registration system in Uruguay, 2006

, ,
Uruguay

The nominal registration system of Uruguay's national immunization program (NIP) tracks administered vaccines on a paper form filled out after each vaccination and collated into a national database, thus allowing for individual follow-up. This study performed a comprehensive assessment of the quality of Uruguay's immunization data in November 2006 to evaluate the validity of the information and to confirm the high national immunization coverage reported by the program
