BID Initiative Literature Review: Improving Data Quality and Promoting the Use of Data for Decision Making
This literature review was conducted to identify, review, and analyze published and grey literature to inform the behavior, organization, and practice activities to be conducted as part of the BID Initiative, and to inform the Initiative’s theory of change and monitoring and evaluation plan. The overall hypothesis of the BID Initiative is that design and national-scale implementation of a defined technology platform and supporting activities will improve data quality and use to strengthen decision making related to immunization programs. This literature review will be used to expand and ground this hypothesis and guide the development of a theory of change.May 1, 2015
BID Initiative Scale Theory of Change | Primary Outcomes 3 & 4
The BID Initiative Theory of Change (ToC) document focuses on Primary Outcomes 3 and 4 of the BID Initiative. This narrative elaborates on the problem statement, BID Initiative hypotheses related to scaling and diffusing of solutions developed and tested to address data quality and use challenges, and the strategic approaches taken to scale within demonstration countries and across the Sub-Sahara Africa region. This ToC includes a graphic (Appendix 1) and a literature review (Appendix 2) that validate many of the assumptions included in the ToC narrative. It is important to note that this ToC is complimentary to that of Primary Outcomes 1 and 2 (ToC1) of the BID Initiative and is not intended to be a standalone document.Jan 28, 2014
BID Initiative Landscape Analysis: Current and Past Projects Targeting Data Quality and Use
The landscape analysis of existing projects reviews past and current approaches, strategies and interventions employed to drive the use of data among managers and decision makers for improved organizational performance and resource allocation. The objectives of this review are to inform the Behavior, Organization, and Practices (BOP) activities in BID Phase I, explore links between BOP and the area of work that rests within the Product Vision Team, and contribute to defining the Initiative’s theory of change and M&E plan.May 1, 2015
BID Initiative Scale Theory of Change – Literature Review
The BID Initiative has a vision to empower countries to enhance immunization and overall health service delivery through improved data collection, quality, and use. The goal is to design a replicable and sustainable solution by taking an approach that brings together information system products, data management policies, and the practices of people that use them, to be tested in a few countries and packaged to deploy at scale in many. The BID Initiative also has embedded within it a peer learning network, the BID Learning Network (BLN), that is intended to accelerate diffusion of knowledge, ideas, lessons learned, and innovations arising out of the BID Initiative activities and that of other entities involved in similar endeavours. This literature review is intended to support the development of a theory of change model that will enable effective monitoring and evaluation of the activities related to the goal of scaling up, and will review theories of scaling, peer learning, networking, and diffusion.

BLN Discussion Meeting Report, 19-22 September 2017
The BID Learning Network hosted a discussion meeting in Lusaka, Zambia, from September 19 to 22, 2017. This report is a record of the proceedings of the meeting that took place in Lusaka. It highlights the discussions around strategies and approaches to improving data, quality, and use among participating countries and includes highlights around the progress made in BID demonstration countries (Tanzania and Zambia), the successes and challenges they have had, and the way forward. The meeting also brainstormed and made recommendations on the continuity and sustainability of the BLN after its first round of support from the Gates Foundation.Feb 7, 2018
Accelerating Harmonization in Digital Health
Digital tools play an important role in supporting front-line health workers who deliver primary care. This paper, which appears in Volume 17 of World Health and Population, explores the current state of efforts undertaken to move away from single-purpose applications of digital health towards integrated systems and solutions that align with national strategies. Through examples from health information systems, data and health worker training, this paper demonstrates how governments and stakeholders are working to integrate digital health services. It emphasizes three factors as crucial for this integration: development and implementation of national digital health strategies; technical interoperability and collaborative approaches to ensure that digital health has an impact on the primary care level. Consolidation of technologies will enable an integrated, scalable approach to the use of digital health to support health workers. Laurie Werner, Global Director of the BID Initiative, and Amanda BenDor, Technical Program Manager for PATH's Digital Health Program, are co-authors of this paper.

The BID Learning Network (BLN) invites you to watch a webinar entitled “Technology Solutions to Routine Immunization Challenges in Nigeria.” End-to-end supply chain and logistics systems are key components of successful immunization programs. However, in Nigeria, supply chain and logistics systems have encountered numerous challenges particularly on the supply side, such as incomplete and inadequate data on commodity turnover and late deliveries to primary health centers (PHCs). To address these challenges, eHealth Africa (eHA) in close collaboration with the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board (KPHCMB) developed the Logistics Management Information System (LoMIS).

The BID Learning Network (BLN) invites you to watch our recent webinar entitled “Data Quality and Nominal Electronic Immunization Registries: Lessons Learned from Costa Rica.” Electronic immunization registries (EIRs) have been in existence in Latin America since the late 1980s with Uruguay and Mexico being among the first countries to implement EIRs in 1987 and 1991, respectively. Since then, most of Latin America, including Costa Rica, have been working towards implementing national EIRs. In this webinar, the presenter shares Costa Rica’s experience with implementing the national EIR.
