Webinar: Building real-time LMIS for the vaccine supply chain in Nigeria

The Better Immunization Data Learning Network (BLN) recently held a webinar entitled “Building real-time LMIS for the vaccine supply chain in Nigeria”. This webinar focused on building an LMIS for vaccine supply in Nigeria with an aim to acquiring a simple but impactful system. The speakers shared the stepwise approach they undertook and how they redesigned their system, adopting automation where it made sense. They discussed the challenges they faced, how they addressed them and the important lessons they have learned in the process of implementation.

Nigeria Immunization Fact Sheet

According to official country reports, infant immunization coverage in Nigeria, as reported by DTP3, increased significantly from 57% in 2008 to 74% in 2010. This was followed by a significant drop to 61% in 2011. These reported coverage improvements were primarily due to the country’s decision in 2006 to add multiple antigens and other child survival interventions to the polio eradication campaigns (now referred to as Immunization Plus Days or IPDs) that are held every 4-6 weeks in the northern polio endemic states and at least twice per year nationally. Given the challenges with disaggregating IPD and routine immunization data sub-nationally, denominator issues, and also increased routine immunization focus nationwide through the Reaching Every Ward (REW) approach, official country estimates have greatly fluctuated since 2007.

WHO Nigeria eHealth Report

eHealth foundation actions build an enabling environment for the use of ICT for health. These include supportive eHealth policy, legal and ethical frameworks; adequate funding from various sources; infrastructure development; and developing the capacity of the health work force through training.  eHealth applications surveyed in 2009 include telemedicine (the delivery of health care services using ICT where distance is a barrier to care); mHealth (the use of mobile devices in delivering health care services); and eLearning (use of ICT for learning).

The Expanded Programme on Immunization was initiated in Nigeria in 1979 as the main strategy aimed at controlling childhood killer diseases, through provision of vaccines and immunization. The overall goal of the programme is to improve immunization coverage on a sustainable basis and reduce disease burden in all communities in Nigeria, while using immunization as platform to strengthen the overall primary health care delivery system.
