This is how Dr. Eddie Mukooyo Sefuluya, a BID Learning Network (BLN) member and Chairperson for the Uganda AIDS Commission, describes the peer learning network that for the last five years has tackled some of the most complex challenges facing health information systems—and developed its most promising solutions. The BLN comprises more than 20 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. With conversation topics ranging from the design of patient registers to community-based early warning systems for Ebola outbreaks, the BLN allows participants to connect, learn, and collaborate in ways that advance their own discrete efforts, while also accelerating the pace of progress for all.

BID Initiative shares lessons and recommendations in new series of briefs

We recently launched a series of briefs summarizing our work alongside the governments of Tanzania and Zambia and our lessons and recommendations spanning seven key subject areas, ranging from the software development cycle, to change management, and peer learning.

In August, BLN participants will travel to Chile to exchange learnings

This August, in collaboration with the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), the BID Learning Network (BLN) will travel to Santiago, Chile to exchange lessons on electronic immunization registries and data management systems. The trip, planned for August 22 through 25, will mark the first visit outside of BLN countries. Chile’s Registro National de Immunizaciones, or RNI, was developed in 2009, following a vaccination campaign to curb the AH1N1 flu pandemic that ravaged South America.

Transforming behavior and culture

Learning from VaxTrac in Benin

Last month, the BID Learning Network (BLN) undertook its first study visit to Benin, one of the VaxTrac implementing countries. Since 2012, VaxTrac, an organisation funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has piloted a tablet-based vaccine management system in 38 public health facilities; these clinics are located in urban and semi-urban communities across three districts, currently, the project has scaled up and is serving a total of 100 facilities across three health zones.
