Data-use tools catching on in health facilities

Since November 2016, the BID Initiative has been rolling out data use interventions in Livingstone and Kazungula districts of Southern Province to help build a culture of data use in the health service. The interventions, such as the data use guide and supportive supervision, have been well-received in the health facilities, with some facilities recording early successes with the tools.

Ona and PATH in Zambia for OpenSRP Immunization Project

Working with the Ministry of Health (MOH), the BID Initiative is creating a culture of data use in the health service to increase access to immunization data and data-based decision-making to improve health outcomes for children. This will be done using tools such as a data use guide, data use campaign, supportive supervision, and the electronic immunization registry (EIR). Together with the MOH, we have partnered with Ona to implement OpenSRP as the immunization registry platform. The Ona team recently joined us in Livingstone, Zambia, to kickoff their work and visit a few health facilities where we will implement the EIR. Rolling out change management interventions in Zambia

Since 2014, the BID Initiative has worked closely with the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Zambia to improve immunization data quality and use. To reach an immunization coverage of 90%, both groups knew that strengthening data collection, quality, and use would be critical.

Guiding the way to better data

Zambia has many challenges that affect health service delivery. One such challenge is the availability of quality data to make decisions. The Ministry of Health (MOH) recognized the need to collect information from health facilities and developed several reporting tools such as the Health Management Information System (HMIS), which captures various indicators across all health areas.

User Advisory Group Established in Zambia

We recently established a new User Advisory Group (UAG) in the Livingstone District of Zambia! Similar to the Tanzania UAG, this group will play a critical role in the design and iteration of proposed solutions and interventions. The goal is to improve immunisation data quality, collection and use addressing the various challenges identified by the EPI program and other stakeholders in the district.

Testing Interventions in Livingstone
