Reaching the Hard to Reach: The Maasai in Tanzania

In the last 10 years, the Maasai have been among the most affected communities by measles. Pastoral communities like the Maasai in the rural Arusha region of Tanzania are very hard to reach, making it even harder to provide the necessary second dose for the measles vaccine to be effective. In fact, the presence of this community played a part in our decision to start the BID Initiative in Arusha as our pilot region. Angela Cheche, a health worker at Kaloleni Health Facility in the Arusha region, recalls how measles previously took the lives of many children, but the introduction of vaccines has made a big difference.
