BID Initiative Tools Developer Summit Report
In December 2013, the Better Immunization Data (BID) Initiative hosted a Tools Developer Summit at the PATH office in Washington, DC. This meeting brought information and communication technology (ICT) developers together with the BID Initiative team, partners, and donors to explore the challenges in immunization systems in Africa. The participants focused on how ICT could be used to address three key challenges: beneficiary interfacing, patient identification, and supply chain management. Over the course of two days, participants shared their expertise and ideas, and discussed opportunities for ongoing collaboration in order to solve these problems.Oct 1, 2013

Understanding the needs and wants of Community Healthcare Workers
mHealth, Peer Learning, Software, Telecommunications, Tools, Training
South Africa
This work builds on the recently published End Consumer Primary Research and aims to inform health and mobile stakeholders about the users of mHealth services in the public sector. The GSMA expects this market knowledge to lead to product design that is more aligned to the needs of users (consumers and health workers), greater adoption and achievement of economies of scale and sustainability, and robust partnershipsbetween public and private sector stakeholders that ultimately reduce the widespread fragmentation of mHealth services in South Africa.

Product Vision for the Better Immunization Data (BID) Initiative

The Product Vision for the Better Immunization Data (BID) Initiative combines a "top down" approach with a "bottom up" view. We begin with the national strategies, incorporating the current context of the users (e.g., the functional architecture) before considering the facility applications (e.g., the technical architecture) that are in use and have gained traction, and how they might tie together. Through a series of seven chapters, you will be led through the steps to organize how your processes and information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure can be integrated and standardized to meet a ministry of health's vision and requirements. This document is not intended to be a definitive description of any single country's health enterprise architecture (EA). Rather, it is a starting point; a toolkit that may be adapted by countries, as necessary, to a specific country's needs and reflective of their unique context. Readers are not expected to be experts in ICT or in EA. However, a basic knowledge of eHealth and its role in supporting health care delivery workflows is assumed. The document is written in plain language with background information, illustrations of key points, and examples where it is thought they will be helpful.

The Use of mHealth for Material Health Care in Ethiopia

"For the research in this thesis, we mainly followed a phase‐by‐phase evaluation and user‐centered approach. Cross‐sectional surveys were initially conducted to assess the role of HEWs and identify gaps in improving maternal health care service delivery. Then, considering mobile technologies as a potential solution for improving the performance of the health workers, we developed and evaluated a set of appropriate smartphone mHealth applications using open source components, including a local language adapted data collection tool, health worker and manager user‐friendly dashboard analytics and maternal‐newborn electronic forms/protocols. This thesis includes the technical details of the application and electronic protocols."

First Experiences in Implementation of Biometric Technology to Link Data From Health and Demographic Surveillance Systems with Health Facility Data

In developing countries, Health and Demographic Surveillance Systems (HDSSs) provide a framework for tracking demographic and health dynamics over time in a defined geographical area. Many HDSSs co-exist with facility-based data sources in the form of Health Management Information Systems (HMIS). Integrating both data sources through reliable record linkage could provide both numerator and denominator populations to estimate disease prevalence and incidence rates in the population and enable determination of accurate health service coverage.

Project Mwana: Using mobile phones to improve early infant HIV diagnostic services, post-natal follow-up and care
In June 2010, the MoH, in partnership with UNICEF, CHAI and ZCHARD, launched the Project Mwana RapidSMS pilot to reduce delays in transmitting results from the HIV test laboratories to the rural health facilities via SMS message. To date, the project has been piloted in 13 predominantly rural districts of Zambia.Jump in. Expand your knowledge.
