The BID Learning Network (BLN) invites you to watch a webinar presentation on “Electronic Immunization Registries in Tanzania and Zambia: From Design to Deployment.” The BID Initiative, a PATH project with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation worked closely with the ministries of health in Tanzania and Zambia to address data-related challenges faced by their immunization programs. The BID Initiative developed interventions comprising electronic immunization registries (EIRs), supply chain management, and data use tools. Join us in this webinar where the speakers provide an overview of the process to develop the digital health solutions, from the design stage through to deployment of the system.

Assessing the incremental costs and savings of introducing electronic immunization registries and stock management systems: Evidence from the BID Initiative in Tanzania and Zambia

Poor data quality and use negatively impact immunization programs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In addition, many LMICs have a shortage of health personnel, and staff available have demanding workloads across several health programs. In order to address these challenges, the BID Initiative introduced a comprehensive suite of interventions, including an electronic immunization registry aimed at improving the quality, reliability, and use of immunization data in Tanzania and Zambia. BID conducted a micro-costing study to estimate the economic costs of service delivery and logistics for the immunization programs with and without the BID interventions in a sample of health facilities and district program offices in each country. BLN Webinar: Triangulation for Improved Decision-Making in Immunization Programs

The BID Learning Network invites you to watch a webinar called: “Triangulation for Improved Decision-Making in Immunization Programs.” Successful immunization programs use data to guide efficient management, tailor strategies, and make decisions to achieve program goals. Many data sources exist within and outside the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), but the use of various data sources together is not optimal in many countries. In the absence of perfect data, public health practice has long acknowledged that combining many pieces of weaker evidence can form a strong basis for making more informed decisions. As such, triangulation which is the synthesis of two or more existing data sources, is used to address relevant questions for program planning and decision-making. This webinar will introduce the concept of data triangulation in immunization programs for decision-making and present examples of data triangulation use in the field.

BLN/Gavi Data Quality and Use Collaborative Meeting Report: Lusaka, 3-5 March 2020

The BID Learning Network (BLN)/Gavi Data Quality and Use (DQU) Collaborative convened a learning session for Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) representatives and data managers from member countries between March 3-5, 2020 in Lusaka, Zambia. The learning session gave participants an opportunity to interact with their peers and share insights around their respective country immunization information systems, data use practices, and the lessons they have learned. The meeting also provided a platform for a rich exchange of knowledge, experiences, and ideas in support of improved immunization data quality and use. The full meeting report is now available.

The BID Learning Network invites you to watch a webinar panel discussion on “Capacity Building for DQU Collaborative Countries.” Global and national stakeholders have acknowledged that routine immunization programs face significant challenges related to the collection, analysis, availability, and use of data for planning, management and improvement of program performance. To address these data challenges, the World Health Organization (WHO) worked with HISP to develop a DHIS2 data quality application suitable for countries.

Vietnam’s scale-up from a district-level pilot to a national-scale electronic immunization registry

Vietnam’s immunization registry system prior to 2009 was a paper-based logbook that was prone to errors, time-consuming, and burdensome for health workers. Starting in 2009, the Vietnam National Expanded Program on Immunization (NEPI) and their partner PATH began visualizing the possibilities and benefits that a national-scale electronic immunization registry (EIR) and vaccine-stock-management system could bring to Vietnam. In 2017, the National Immunization Information System (NIIS)—a sustainably planned, government-run, nationwide EIR system—was officially launched along with national mandates on system use. Much of the success of the scale-up of the Vietnam EIR can be attributed to three key factors: (a) planning for scale from the beginning, (b) commitment from the government, and (c) technical partnerships. The story of scaling up, however, did not come without challenges and hurdles. This case study reviews Vietnam’s journey from district pilot to national-level EIR.Apr 8, 2020
BID Learning Network Factsheet
The BID Learning Network (BLN) was established in 2014 as part of the BID Initiative to bring together digital health experts and immunization program managers from across sub-Saharan Africa to exchange experiences in implementing electronic immunization registries, data management systems, change management approaches, and data use policies and practices. In response to a growing demand from countries to adopt their own digital health solutions, the BLN is expanding its portfolio. Perceptions of factors influencing the introduction and adoption of electronic immunization registries in Tanzania and Zambia: a mixed methods study

As technology has become cheaper and more accessible, health programs are adopting digital health interventions (DHI) to improve the provision of and demand for health services. These interventions are complex and require strong coordination and support across different health system levels and government departments, and they need significant capacities in technology and information to be properly implemented. Electronic immunization registries (EIRs) are types of DHI used to capture, store, access, and share individual-level, longitudinal health information in digitized records. The BID Initiative worked in partnership with the governments of Tanzania and Zambia to introduce an EIR at the sub-national level in both countries within 5 years as part of a multi-component complex intervention package focusing on data use capacity-building. We aimed to gather and describe learnings from the BID experience by conducting a framework-based mixed methods study to describe perceptions of factors that influenced scale-up of the EIR.
