The BID Learning Network (BLN) invites you to watch our recent webinar entitled “Data Quality and Nominal Electronic Immunization Registries: Lessons Learned from Costa Rica.”
Electronic immunization registries (EIRs) have been in existence in Latin America since the late 1980s with Uruguay and Mexico being among the first countries to implement EIRs in 1987 and 1991, respectively. Since then, most of Latin America, including Costa Rica, have been working towards implementing national EIRs. In this webinar, the presenter shares Costa Rica’s experience with implementing the national EIR, taking into account the motivation behind its development, strategic considerations for planning, key players involved, as well as the limitations and challenges encountered. Further, the presenter shares progress made towards deploying the EIR nationwide and plans for the future.
This presentation should be of interest to Data Management Specialists, EPI Managers, Health Management Information System (HMIS) Specialists and other health care specialists committed to improving data collection, quality and use through electronic data management systems.

PRESENTER: DR. ROBERTO ARROBA TIJERINO
Dr. Roberto Arroba Tijerino is a medical specialist in Occupational Medicine with close to twenty years of experience in public health, epidemiology and research. Dr. Arroba Tijerino is currently the National Immunization Coordinator at the Ministry of Health in Costa Rica, where he has served since 2009. Before joining the Ministry of Health, Dr. Arroba Tijerino practiced medicine in both the private and public sectors in Costa Rica which included Nestlé, Holcim and Chiquita. He has taught in the School of Public Health at the University of Costa Rica. He is the Technical Secretary of the National Vaccination and Epidemiology Commission of Costa Rica. He is also the immunization focal point person for the Costa Rica Social Security and the Pan American Health Organization in Costa Rica. Dr. Arroba holds a Bachelor of Medicine, Master’s degrees in Public Health (with emphasis on Health Management) and Epidemiology. He is currently pursuing a Master’s in Health Economy.
MODERATOR: MS. CATHERINE MUYAWALA
Catherine Muyawala, the BLN Community Coordinator, is a knowledge management specialist with over 20 years of experience in information management and dissemination. She has held various knowledge management – related portfolios in diverse sectors including public health where she championed the use of m-Health solutions for Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) in sexual and reproductive health among adolescents. During the course of her career she acquired diverse skills that have culminated into coordinating both social communication and strategic information programs, events management, communities of practice facilitation among multi-sectoral and multi-cultural stakeholders. Catherine holds a BA in Library and Information Science and a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA).
