BID Learning Network serves as conduit for exchange and growth among member countries

For the past six years, the BID Learning Network (BLN) has been a conduit of learning, information exchange, and peer support in Sub-Saharan Africa aimed at improving the availability of routine health data collection and use. In 2018, the BLN partnered with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to work with countries receiving support from Gavi to improve data quality and use through peer learning and interaction, coupled with collective analysis and resolution of immunization data challenges. The work was focused on equipping countries with the capacity, plans, and solutions to improve immunization data and service delivery in alignment with Gavi programmatic areas. A critical part of this work included monitoring and documenting the experiences and lessons that emerged from the Collaborative.

For Silemane Ouedraogo, an Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) Data Manager in Burkina Faso, one of the most beneficial parts of the BID Learning Network (BLN) is the opportunity to learn from his peers about the digital health systems and technologies that have worked in their own countries. Since 2014, the BID Learning Network (BLN) has brought together digital health experts and immunization program managers from across sub-Saharan Africa to share experiences about implementing electronic immunization registries (EIRs), data management systems, change management approaches, and data use policies and practices. The BLN has since expanded its scope to provide a set of holistic services and mentorship on the design, implementation, and scale-up of digital and data solutions to address routine data challenges. For the past few years, the BLN has been mentoring a range of countries interested in adopting digital and data solutions of their own.

Sometimes the best solutions have a deceptively simple answer, or the solution already exists. Peer learning networks are an opportunity for professionals working across a range of workplaces, sectors and countries to swap experiences, share best practices, and adapt defined solutions to their own contexts, so as not to reinvent the wheel. For the past four years, The BID Learning Network (BLN) has been a platform for this sharing. As the BLN convenes its final discussion meeting in Lusaka, Zambia this week, we caught up with one BLN member, Mbye Njie, EPI Capacity Building and Surveillance Officer for The Gambia, to discuss what the BLN has meant to him, since it launched in 2013.

The Gambia sees early successes with BLN small grant award

Last fall, The Gambia was awarded the BID Learning Network’s (BLN) first small grant to develop a comprehensive web-based immunization registry to capture and track every child born in the country’s Western Health Region, where the system is being piloted. Seven months into the pilot, the system known as the E-Tracker, is already helping health workers see the positive impacts of this digital registry.

The BID Learning Network offers the small grant program to facilitate the advancement of design member country goals that align with the BID Initiative priorities. The program’s objective tie into the BLN’s overall goals, including experimenting with projects in countries to determine their applicability; and using this experience to inform national and global decision-making.
