Zambia’s First Lady praises progress as the BID Initiative celebrates improvements in data quality and use

On Friday, staff from the Zambia Ministry of Health (MOH) and the BID Initiative waited eagerly in a grand ballroom. Staff dressed in colour chitenge fabric outfits or smart suits waited for the arrival of Zambia’s First Lady, Mrs. Esther Lungu and Dr. Chilufya Chitalu, the Minister of Health. Mrs. Lungu is an advocate for maternal and child health, and her strong stance on immunization supports BID Initiative’s objectives.

Zambia celebrates its progress and commitment to better data

Today, the BID Initiative is celebrating its partnership with the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Zambia, and the formal release of the Zambian electronic immunization registry (ZEIR). In a showcase event Zambia’s First Lady Esther Lungu, and the Permanent Secretary of the MOH, Dr. Jabbin Mulwanda, among other special guests will jointly celebrate progress toward fostering a culture of data use among healthcare workers (HCWs) to improve immunization coverage throughout the country.

Highlighting solutions from digital health – propelling the field out of the era of “wild west” data collection, into a data use culture

The decade between 2000-2010 can be described as the era of the digital health pilot program. This “wild west” offered a glimpse into the untapped potential of collecting data by integrating digital tools into current health systems, where information flow was previously stagnant or non-existent. In an effort to create lasting, high-impact improvements to healthcare delivery, sharing lessons and best practices learned from implementing these pilot programs can ensure that digital health moves beyond pilots and becomes a health system mainstay.

Hello Tanga!

In October, we announced our plans to expand the BID Initiative in Tanzania and are pleased to share we will be expanding to the Tanga Region, followed shortly afterward by Kilimanjaro. This is a huge milestone for the BID Initiative’s work with the government of Tanzania. It means we successfully completed the implementation of data use and data quality interventions in the initial test region, the Arusha Region, and it signals another step toward scaling throughout the country.

In August, BLN participants will travel to Chile to exchange learnings

This August, in collaboration with the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), the BID Learning Network (BLN) will travel to Santiago, Chile to exchange lessons on electronic immunization registries and data management systems. The trip, planned for August 22 through 25, will mark the first visit outside of BLN countries. Chile’s Registro National de Immunizaciones, or RNI, was developed in 2009, following a vaccination campaign to curb the AH1N1 flu pandemic that ravaged South America.

The Gambia sees early successes with BLN small grant award

Last fall, The Gambia was awarded the BID Learning Network’s (BLN) first small grant to develop a comprehensive web-based immunization registry to capture and track every child born in the country’s Western Health Region, where the system is being piloted. Seven months into the pilot, the system known as the E-Tracker, is already helping health workers see the positive impacts of this digital registry.
